Saturday Morning, the Brisbane Way

Before the city has properly woken, the river is already alive. Cyclists weave along the waterfront, dogs tug impatiently at their leads and, beneath the fig trees at Brisbane Powerhouse, growers are unloading crates filled with just-picked citrus, heirloom tomatoes, fragrant herbs and armfuls of flowers. This is how Brisbane begins its weekend.

Every Saturday morning bright and early at 6am, the Jan Powers Farmers Markets brings together producers from across South East Queensland in one of the city’s most-loved neighbourhoods. There are no supermarket aisles or polished displays here. Instead, you’ll find warm loaves handed across the counter by the baker who made them, strawberries still carrying the scent of the field and coffee worth lingering over while musicians provide the soundtrack to the morning.

The beauty of the markets is that there is nowhere to rush. Wander slowly between the stalls, stopping to taste artisan cheeses, fresh honey or seasonal fruit before settling beneath the jacarandas with a freshly squeezed juice or a perfectly made flat white. Pick up a bottle of small-batch olive oil, a jar of homemade jam or something unexpected to take home, each with a story that begins long before it reaches the table.

From here, the morning unfolds naturally. Follow the river through New Farm Park, browse the galleries at Brisbane Powerhouse or simply watch the CityCats drift past as the city settles into the day. By late morning, the market begins to quieten, baskets are full, coffee cups are empty and Brisbane has revealed one of its simplest pleasures: a Saturday spent exactly as the locals do.
